Operation Vittles: The Berlin Airlift

Course Description

Victorious allies during World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union would see their relations deteriorate following the Soviet blockade of a divided Berlin in June 1948. As the Cold War ignited, the United States and its allies gambled on a plan to save the city and its 2.2 million residents. Asked if the U.S. Air Force could deliver coal, Lieutenant General Curtis LeMay responded that "The Air Force can deliver anything!" American credibility and an affirmation of freedom to a war-torn Europe were counting on it. On this 70th anniversary of the Airlift, come hear how this 11-month round-the-clock operation became a humanitarian achievement.
