Course Description

You probably won't be surprised to learn that Renaissance banquets featured dozens of elaborate dishes and just as many rules of etiquette. But did you know that radishes and cheese were the best foods for students and that mustard sauce was good for melancholy? Renaissance meals were carefully bound up in all kinds of food rules that determined who could eat what and how food should be presented and served at the table. Everything people ate, from tavern snacks to palace feasts, communicated something about their status, religion, relationships and power. Take a seat at the Renaissance table and learn about food and the performance of social identity.
