Painting After Warhol

Course Description

Campbell’s soup, Brillo pads and starlets all have one thing in common: Pop artist Andy Warhol spotlighted them in his colorful paintings. What happened to the field of painting following Warhol's groundbreaking marriage of art and popular culture? What should artists paint, and why? Together, we’ll explore the development of painting in the wake of Warhol’s game-changing work. We'll also study other contemporary painters such as Chuck Close, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mark Bradford and Julie Mehretu in classroom lectures and discussions.
