Six American Artists

Course Description

Kimbell docent Deborah Reed repeats a short class showing how six American artists helped forge a unique American visual culture. Included are portraitist Gilbert Stuart, naturalist John James Audubon, genre painter Winslow Homer, landscape painter Thomas Moran, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and perhaps the most American artist of them all, Frederic Remington. See how these artists used European models as a basis, but developed art immediately recognizable as American. You know these images; they are on our money, hang in the halls of Congress, and illustrate our textbooks. Learn the historical and social context using both well-known and lesser know works.
