Wise Women in Ancient Cultures

Course Description

The course will focus on poetry, mythology, stories, and songs by and about wise women in ancient cultures. Writings will include selections from Sumerian, Egyptian, Native American, Far Eastern, Celtic, and Christian traditions. Testimonies of ancient cultures, written by both women and men, will span the years from 3,000 B.C.E. through the 2-4th centuries. Wise women featured will include Inanna, Eve, Gaia, Spider Woman, Kuan Yin, Sophia, and Mary. We will also read contemporary writer Sue Monk Kidd's The Dance of the Dissident Daughter, which tells the story of her spiritual quest in search of the Black Madonna. Class meets every other week: 9/19, 10/3, 10/17, 10/31, 11/14, 11/28.
